– My modlimy się do Ducha Świętego. Czeka nas wyjątkowy moment, bardzo ważny dla przyszłości Kościoła, i nie możemy podjąć tego wyzwania bez Jego pomocy. Dlatego poprosiłem dzisiaj moich parafian, aby wzywali Ducha Świętego. Tak samo my, kardynałowie, i nasi wierni – wszyscy jesteśmy w modlitwie, prosząc o Jego obecność – mówi kard. Ambongo. Podkreśla przy tym, że chodzi nie o wybór papieża z Afryki czy jakiegokolwiek regionu świata, lecz o tego, którego zechce sam Bóg.
Zapytany o to, czy kardynałowie zdążyli się poznać przed głosowaniem, odpowiedział stanowczo: – Zawsze tak to wygląda: kardynałowie przyjeżdżają z całego świata. Zawsze tak było i zawsze tak to działało. Nie ma w tym nic szczególnego.
Zaznaczył też, że nie przybył do Rzymu w imieniu żadnego kontynentu: – Nie jestem tu dla Konga, nie jestem tu dla Afryki – jestem tu dla Kościoła powszechnego. Kiedy wszystko się skończy, wrócę do domu, założę mój biret arcybiskupa i podejmę swoją walkę dalej – chyba że zostanę papieżem.
Dla kard. Ambongo najważniejszy jest Duch Święty – Jego obecność, światło i prowadzenie. – Może Duch Święty zadziała bardzo sprawnie i od razu da nam papieża? – pyta z nadzieją.
Podkreślił też mocno, że mimo różnic, Kościół jest jeden: – Nie ma dwóch Kościołów. W przyszłym tygodniu zobaczycie papieża dla całego Kościoła – to znak komunii pomiędzy kardynałami. Tak, są różnice – to normalne, ale to nie znaczy, że jest podział. Nawet w rodzinach tata i mama mogą mieć różne opinie, ale to nie znaczy, że nie ma rodziny. Tak samo jest z Kościołem.

There are not two Churches – Cardinal Ambongo speaks before the conclave on prayer, unity, and the Holy Spirit
Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu OFMCap of Congo, who has arrived in the Vatican ahead of the May 7, 2025 conclave, gave a short but meaningful interview to the Polish publishing house Biały Kruk. The Archbishop of Kinshasa emphasized the importance of prayer and opening up to the Holy Spirit’s guidance as an essential condition for the election of a new pope.
– We are praying to the Holy Spirit. We are facing a unique moment, one that is crucial for the future of the Church, and we cannot take on this challenge without His help. That is why I asked my parishioners to pray and call upon the Holy Spirit. We, the cardinals, and our faithful – we are all in prayer, asking for His presence – said Cardinal Ambongo. He stressed that this is about praying for the shepherd God desires, not a pope from any particular part of the world.
Asked whether the cardinals had time to get to know each other before the voting, he replied firmly: – That’s always how it works. Cardinals arrive from all over the world. It’s always been this way, and it always works. Nothing unusual about it.
He made it clear that he had not come to Rome as a delegate of any continent: – I am not here for Congo, I am not here for Africa – I am here for the universal Church. When everything is over, I will go home, put on my archbishop’s biretta, and resume my mission – unless I become pope.
For Cardinal Ambongo, the Holy Spirit is the most important actor – His presence, light, and guidance. – Maybe the Holy Spirit will act swiftly and give us a pope right away? – he asked with hope.
He also strongly emphasized that despite differences, the Church remains one: – There are not two Churches. Next week you will see a pope for the entire Church – that is a sign of communion among the cardinals. Yes, there are differences – that is normal – but that does not mean division. Even in families, a father and a mother may have different opinions, but that does not mean there is no family. It is the same with the Church.
