„Ojcze nasz”. Trzy „Zdrowaś Maryjo” – o wiarę, nadzieję i miłość.
Nawiedzenie: nienarodzony Chrystus uświęca Jana, a Maryja niesie Go do domu, nie zostawia w Nazarecie. Narodzenie: Bóg wchodzi w ubóstwo betlejemskie, nie w pałac. Ofiarowanie: pierworodny podlega Prawu, a Symeon zapowiada miecz. Znalezienie w świątyni: dwunastoletni zostaje w domu Ojca, a rodzice szukają Go trzy dni. Część radosna nie jest sielanką. Już w Niej jest zapowiedź krzyża. Tradycyjnie odmawiano ją w poniedziałek i czwartek.
Środa, sobota i niedziela należały do tych tajemnic.
One hundred and fifty Hail Marys in place of the psalter
October is not in the Church a month of any Marian devotion one pleases. It is the month of the Rosary: fifteen mysteries, three parts and one hundred and fifty Hail Marys. October 4, 2026 already falls in that time. The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary falls on October 7. The older form of the prayer does not know a fourth part.
The Rosary is not a chaplet said to quiet the voice. It is the psalter of those who did not sing the hundred and fifty psalms in choir. In the monasteries the brothers who could not read said a hundred and fifty Our Fathers in place of the breviary. In time the angelic salutation took the place of the psalm, and beside the bead came a mystery from the life of Christ, pondered through Mary. Hence the old name: the psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The number is not an ornament. One hundred and fifty salutations answer to one hundred and fifty psalms.
Dominican tradition binds the beginning to the preaching of St Dominic against the Albigensians, in the first decades of the thirteenth century. The historical string of beads is older and simpler: hermits counted prayers on a cord, lay people on grains. What the Church received as the Rosary was arranged later. In the fifteenth century Blessed Alan de la Roche, a Dominican, bound the fifteen mysteries to the rosary confraternities and to the duty of fifteen decades. From that time the prayer has the shape which October does not change: the joyful part, the sorrowful and the glorious.
That shape was fixed by a battle. On October 7, 1571 the fleet of the Holy League broke the Ottoman power at Lepanto. Pius V ascribed the victory to the Rosary said in Rome and in the confraternities. He instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory. Gregory XIII moved it to the first Sunday of October under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. Only later did the day return to October 7, the date of the battle itself. October did not therefore come from a pastoral calendar. It came from a field on which prayer stood beside the ships.
Leo XIII at the end of the nineteenth century made of this month a standing duty of the Church. With the encyclical Supremi apostolatus officio of September 1, 1883 he opened a series of rosary documents. He taught that the Rosary is a weapon against the errors of the age, a meditation on the life of Christ through Mary and a protection of the Church, not a private devotion for a chosen piety. In 1917 at Fatima the call to the daily Rosary returned no longer as a religious counsel, but as a condition of peace. The traditional form remained the same: fifteen mysteries.
It is said thus. The sign of the cross. The Creed on the crucifix. The Our Father. Three Hail Marys – for faith, hope and charity. The Glory Be. Then five decades of the given part. At each: the announcing of the mystery, an Our Father, ten Hail Marys, the Glory Be. After the part, the prayers commended by Leo XIII, the Salve Regina, the Litany of Loreto or the Sub tuum praesidium and the prayer of St Bernard, beginning with the words “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary”. Repetition is not the vain multiplication of words against which the Gospel warns. It is like breath at one mystery, not like a new petition at every bead. Whoever loses the mystery is left with the string alone.
The joyful part covers the hidden life, before Christ went out to teach. The Annunciation: the Word becomes flesh with the Virgin’s consent, not without her. The Visitation: the unborn Christ sanctifies John, and Mary carries Him to the house, she does not leave Him in Nazareth. The Nativity: God enters the poverty of Bethlehem, not a palace. The Presentation: the first-born is subject to the Law, and Simeon foretells the sword. The Finding in the Temple: the twelve-year-old remains in His Father’s house, and His parents seek Him for three days. The joyful part is not an idyll. Already in it is the foreshadowing of the cross. Traditionally it was said on Monday and Thursday.
The sorrowful part cannot be shortened to “suffering in general”. The garden: the human will of Christ submits to the Father, the bloody sweat is not an image. The scourging: the body of the Word given over for sin, not for a mood. The crowning with thorns: mockery of a kingdom that is not of this world. The carrying of the cross: a road, not a metaphor. The crucifixion: a true death, the side pierced, Mary beneath the cross. Tuesday and Friday were appointed for these mysteries not by chance. The Church does not ponder the Resurrection while passing by Friday.
The glorious part begins where the tomb ends. The Resurrection: the body was not left in the linen. The Ascension: Christ does not dissolve into an idea, He ascends with the body. The descent of the Holy Ghost: the Church receives speech, not a mood. The Assumption: Mary, who bore the body of the Word, is not left in the dust. The coronation: the Queen stands with the King, she does not take His place. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday belonged to these mysteries. Saturday is Mary’s day precisely because on Holy Saturday the faith of the Church remained with her, when the apostles were scattered.
In 2002 the mysteries of light were added. The traditional Rosary does not count them. The baptism in the Jordan, Cana, the preaching of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration and the Eucharist are in the Gospel. They do not change the psalter of one hundred and fifty salutations into two hundred. October, which the Church received from Lepanto and from Leo XIII, counts three parts. Whoever says one a day goes in a week through the whole life of Christ. Whoever in October remains with the fifteen mysteries does not shorten the prayer. He leaves it as the Church carried it through the ages.
