15 VI 1975 roku ks. kan. Waldemar Szczurowski przyjął święcenia kapłańskie z rąk biskupa Jerzego Stroby w diecezji szczecińsko-kamieńskiej. W niedzielę, 22 VI 2025 roku, podczas uroczystej Mszy w zabytkowym kościele w Jasienicy świętował 50-lecie swojego kapłaństwa. Z tej okazji został, decyzją Prezesa IPN Karola Nawrockiego, odznaczony złotym medalem „Republicae Memoriae Meritum”.
Uroczysta Msza zgromadziła licznych gości: duchownych, przedstawicieli władz, służb mundurowych, środowisk naukowych, samorządowych oraz parafian i przyjaciół. Homilię wygłosił ks. dr Jan Mazur, podkreślając zasługi jubilata dla Kościoła, Ojczyzny i lokalnej społeczności.
W uroczystości uczestniczyli: dyrektor szczecińskiego Oddziału IPN Krzysztof Męciński, który wręczył medal w imieniu Prezesa IPN; dyrektor Archiwum Państwowego w Szczecinie dr hab. Ks. kan. Waldemar Szczurowski został uhonorowany medalem „za wybitne zasługi dla upamiętniania historii Narodu Polskiego w latach 1939–1990 oraz wspierania Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej w działalności edukacyjnej, naukowej i wydawniczej”. Dyrektor Męciński przekazał również list z podziękowaniami i pamiątkowy grawer od pracowników IPN.
Dokonania ks. Szczurowskiego obejmują:
współpracę od 1978 roku z KSS „KOR”, kolportaż bezdebitowych wydawnictw, także na terenie radzieckiej jednostki wojskowej w Szczecinie,
organizację spotkań opozycji w Duszpasterstwie Akademickim,
posługę kapelana Solidarności w latach 1980–1981,
wspieranie rodzin internowanych po 13 XII 1981, przechowywanie dokumentów Solidarności, głoszenie kazań patriotycznych, odwiedzanie więźniów politycznych w Wierzchowie i przekazywanie ich relacji podziemnym strukturom,
pomysłodawstwo „Zaduszek Wolności” – upamiętnienia bohaterów podziemia, współorganizowanych od 2018 roku z IPN i Archiwum Państwowym w Szczecinie,
inicjatywę upamiętnienia pionierów OSP poprzez umieszczanie tablic na remizach strażackich,
współprojekt Zachodniopomorskiego Krzyża św. Floriana – odznaczenia dla najstarszych strażaków i założycieli OSP.
Odznaczony Krzyżem Oficerskim Polonia Restituta, Krzyżem Wolności i Solidarności, Medalem Stulecia Odzyskania Niepodległości oraz odznaką „Działacza Opozycji”. Obecnie między innymi pełni funkcję kapelana Solidarności i Ludzi Pracy Regionu Nad Odrą, kapelana strażaków archidiecezji szczecińsko-kamieńskiej, kapelana firmy Genealogia Polska.

Chaplain of Solidarity and Genealogia Polska awarded the golden medal “Republicae Memoriae Meritum”
On June 15, 1975, Fr. Waldemar Szczurowski was ordained a priest by Bishop Jerzy Stroba in the Szczecin-Kamień Diocese. On June 22, 2025, during a solemn Mass in the historic church built by the Augustinians in Jasienica, he celebrated his 50th anniversary of priestly service. On this occasion, he was awarded the golden medal “Republicae Memoriae Meritum” by the Szczecin branch director of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), Krzysztof Męciński.
The Mass was attended by clergy, friends, parishioners, representatives of local government, uniformed services, academic institutions, and anti-communist circles from the era of the Polish People’s Republic. The homily was delivered by Fr. Dr. Jan Mazur, who highlighted the jubilarian’s service to the Church, the homeland, and the local community.
The celebration was graced by the presence of Krzysztof Męciński (director of the Szczecin IPN), Dr. habil. Krzysztof Kowalczyk (director of the State Archives in Szczecin), Dr. Shivan Fate (Policki starosta), Janusz Szwyd (chairman of the Policki County Council), Jarosław Burba (mayor of Nowe Warpno), Magdalena Sosnowska (deputy mayor of Police), Senior Brigadier Mirosław Pender (Provincial Commander of the State Fire Service), Brigadier General Marek Kowalski, Junior Brigadier Piotr Maciejczyk, Piotr Makuch (Szczecin City Police Commander), Sławomir Okruch (President of the Board of the Polish Chimney Sweeps Corporation), Dr. Piotr Korycki (delegate of the Union of Reserve Officers of the Republic of Poland, also representing the General Directorate of Genealogia Polska in Texas), Major Dr. Piotr Korycki, Warrant Officer Krzesisław Korycki from the “Strzelec” Association, members of the Chapter of the West Pomeranian St. Florian Cross, and representatives of the ZS “Strzelec”.
Fr. Szczurowski was awarded the medal for “outstanding merits in commemorating the history of the Polish Nation in the years 1939–1990 and supporting the Institute of National Remembrance in educational, scholarly, and publishing activities.” Director Męciński personally expressed thanks for the cooperation and assured its continuation. The jubilarian also received a letter of thanks and a commemorative engraving from the employees of the IPN in Szczecin.
Fr. Szczurowski’s achievements include cooperation with the Committee for Social Self-Defense KOR since 1978, distribution of underground publications even within the Soviet military unit in Szczecin, organization of discussion meetings at the Szczecin Academic Chaplaincy with opposition activists from KSS KOR and the Movement for the Defense of Human and Civic Rights, serving as chaplain of the West Pomeranian Solidarity from August 1980 to the imposition of martial law in December 1981, supporting families of internees, safeguarding documents taken from the Solidarity Regional Board headquarters in Szczecin, delivering patriotic sermons, visiting political prisoners in Wierzchowo, and relaying their written messages to the underground structures of West Pomeranian Solidarity.
He is the originator of the “Freedom All Souls’ Day” initially held in Szczecin churches each November, and since 2018 co-organized with IPN and the State Archives in Szczecin to honor the heroes of the independence struggles and anti-communist underground. He initiated the commemoration of pioneer firefighters of West Pomerania by placing plaques on the buildings of volunteer fire brigades in the region. He co-created and co-designed the West Pomeranian St. Florian Cross, an award presented primarily to the oldest firefighters and founders of volunteer fire brigades in retirement living in West Pomerania.
Fr. Szczurowski has been honored with the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity, the Medal of the Centenary of Regained Independence, and the Honorary Badge “Opposition Activist”. He currently serves as chaplain of Solidarity and the People of Labour of the Region on the Oder, chaplain of the archdiocese’s firefighters, chaplain of the company Genealogia Polska for 20 years, and guardian of the “Strzelec” Association.
