Modlin Fortress Opens the Season. 220 Years of History and Plenty of Attractions for May Weekend
The May weekend has traditionally marked the start of the tourist season at the Modlin Fortress. This year’s opening has a special dimension – it coincides with the celebration of the 220th anniversary of the construction of this monumental fortress, one of the largest in Europe.
The Modlin Fortress is an extraordinary place on the map of Poland. Its construction was initiated by Napoleon Bonaparte himself in 1806 when he issued an order in Poznań to fortify bridgeheads in Wyszogród, Serock, Modlin, and Praga . The creator of the first plans was French General François de Chasseloup-Laubat . Today, it is one of the largest and best-preserved structures of its kind in Poland, and at the same time the longest building in Europe – the 2,250-meter-long Defensive Barracks impress even the most seasoned travelers .
Over the centuries, the fortress was the scene of key events. Besieged by the Russians in 1813 after Napoleon’s defeat, again during the November Uprising (1831), then by the Germans in 1915 and in September 1939 . In 1920, Polish-Bolshevik battles were fought over it . In the interwar period, elite units were stationed there, including the Armored Forces Officer Cadet School and the Sapper Training Center . After 1989, the army gradually withdrew from the forts, and since 2013, the former Modlin Garrison has been in private hands . Its position as a tourist attraction has been systematically growing – mainly due to the exhibitions and events taking place at this site.

At Modlin Fortress, you can also find the Great Historical Collection made of COBI blocks – a miniature world presenting extraordinary dioramas in historic rooms, i.e., three-dimensional miniatures depicting specific historical scenes. The exhibition in the Red Tower covers over 1,200 square meters and is the largest COBI block exhibition in Poland. Here, you can immerse yourself in the world of World War I and II battles, and also look into a modern battlefield.
Run to the Barracks – a Nighttime Event for the Brave
May weekend is just a preview of what awaits thrill-seekers within the fortress walls. On May 22, the 7th edition of the Run to the Barracks will take place – a night race over a distance of 5 km . According to the organizers, this is the only race in the world run almost entirely inside a building! The route leads through the Defensive Barracks – the longest building in Europe. The number of spots is limited, and registration lasts until May 15.
The date of the race is no coincidence. May 22 marks the 104th anniversary of the start of the battles on St. Anne’s Mountain during the 3rd Silesian Uprising, in which cadets from the No. 2 Cadet Corps in Modlin took part . In commemoration of their heroic stance, Marshal Józef Piłsudski established May 21 as the official Cadet Day.
The Modlin Fortress, owned by the Poznań-based Konkret Group, is an object of an unprecedented scale. The owner of the complex is systematically expanding the tourist offerings. The year 2026, declared by councilors as the Year of the 220th Anniversary of the Modlin Fortress, is to be a time of reflection on the past, but also an opportunity to create new spaces . Plans include, among others, the revitalization of the Cadet Gate into a hotel with 123 rooms and the creation of a Rope Park .
