Zakroczym to honor its 1939 defenders
Residents of Zakroczym will gather on September 27, 2026, to commemorate the 87th anniversary of the town’s defense. The ceremony will pay tribute to the soldiers and residents who defended Zakroczym and their homeland in September 1939.
The Zakroczym municipal government invited residents to join in preserving the memory of the heroes of the 1939 defensive war. The announcement did not provide a time or a detailed program for the observance.
Zakroczym was strategically important in 1939 because of its place in the Modlin Fortress defense system. According to official historical materials published by the municipality, Fort I Zakroczym held out until September 28, 1939, under the command of Tadeusz Dorant. Traces of the September 1939 fighting also remain on local landmarks, including the 19th-century postal marker on Koźmińskiego Street.
Memorial sites in Zakroczym commemorate the defenders today, including the monument in the September 1939 Soldiers Square, the Heroes of September monument at the parish cemetery, and the memorial at Fort I. The town’s official history also records that the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross burned during the fighting in 1939 and was rebuilt between 1945 and 1949.
