Przedmioty mają wejść do zbiorów Wystawy Dziejów Miasta.

Wiosną i latem 1939 r. Wojsko Polskie szykowało tam umocnienia tak zwanej Linii Schodowej, nad Biebrzą i Brzozówką, w pobliżu Twierdzy Osowiec. Teren wszedł potem w pas Samodzielnej Grupy Operacyjnej „Narew”.

A mess fork came back from an empty house

Councillor Sebastian Kaliński reported the acquisition of relics of the Nowy Dwór Electrotechnical Battalion. Into his hands and those of mayor Sebastian Sosiński came 15 photographs with the original album cards, with period captions, and a fork from the battalion mess from the time of the Second Polish Republic. The objects are to enter the collection of the Exhibition of the History of the Town.

About 20 years ago several residents found them in a local empty house. For two decades they lay with a resident of Warsaw. Kaliński wrote that the point was that they should not remain in a private collection.

In the pictures are soldiers of the battalion at Karpowicze in Podlasie. In the spring and summer of 1939 the Polish Army was preparing there the fortifications of the so-called Stepped Line, on the Biebrza and the Brzozówka, near Osowiec Fortress. The ground later fell within the belt of the Independent Operational Group “Narew”. Kaliński does not decide whether the electrotechnical troops and the sappers were making crossings, working on the fortifications, or doing yet other tasks. He wrote that this is not yet known.

The fork is of silver-plated alpaca. The hallmark points to the Austrian firm Arthur Krupp Berndorf. The mark “K. B. E. Zpt.” means, according to the councillor, the Mess of the Electrotechnical Supply Battalion. “J. Klein” is not the officer of the piece of cutlery, but the Warsaw shop and distributor of that firm.

Kaliński thanked mayor Sosiński for the quick reaction. He added that without the town’s decision the relics might not have reached the collection, and that he will keep digging. He himself wrote that he counts on the fork and the photographs finding a place in the exhibition’s holdings. The announcement does not say that the handover has already taken place.
