Dreszler korzystała z materiałów historycznych, do których dotarła m.in. w „Kalendarium Nowodworskim”.
Barbara Dreszler zaprasza na swoje stoisko i spotkanie autorskie, podczas którego mieszkańcy będą mogli bliżej poznać powieść prowadzącą czytelników do czasów Napoleona, Józefiny i początków Twierdzy Modlin.
Whispers from the Narew: Barbara Dreszler Tells the Story of the Nowy Dwór Region
The history of the Modlin Fortress, the Nowy Dwór region, and the Napoleonic era has become the foundation of Barbara Dreszler’s debut saga. The author wrote the novel with the 220th anniversary of the establishment of the Modlin Fortress in mind, but the book also has a deeply personal meaning for her.
Barbara Dreszler, a resident of Modlin Fortress and a teacher with 31 years of experience, contacted our editorial office. The first volume of her three-part historical saga, “Szepty znad Narwi” (“Whispers from the Narew”), titled “W cieniu Cesarzowej” (“In the Shadow of the Empress”), has just been published.
Dreszler set the story in the early 19th century, drawing on the history of the lands along the Narew and Vistula rivers and the beginnings of the Modlin Fortress. She wrote the novel as a tribute marking the fortress’s upcoming 220th anniversary in December.
A Book Born from Remembrance
There is also a personal story behind the saga. Dreszler dedicated the book to the memory of her late husband, a lieutenant colonel who began his military career in Modlin 31 years ago as a second lieutenant in the local 3OWT unit.
Her husband died 15 years ago. For the author, the novel is a testament to the memory of his love for the uniform and for the region that was part of their life together.
Josephine on the Narew
The inspiration for the novel came from Dreszler’s discovery of information about Empress Josephine’s presence in this region. She drew on historical materials she found, among other sources, in the “Kalendarium Nowodworskie.” On this foundation, she created a story combining real events and historical figures with fictional characters.
The story takes readers through places familiar to local residents: Modlin Fortress, Zakroczym, Brody, Czarnowo, and the Gutakowski Palace in Góra on the Narew.
The first volume opens with the Battle of Czarnowo in 1806. It later introduces an intrigue surrounding the construction of the Modlin Fortress. Readers also encounter Empress Josephine’s birthday celebration in Nowy Dwór in 1808 and visit the Gutakowski Palace, where Józef Wybicki plays a revolutionary mazurka in the novel.
Another plotline involves a secret nighttime boat expedition during which Josephine and Anna attempt to uncover the truth surrounding the construction of the fortress.
From Raszyn to Moscow
“Szepty znad Narwi” is planned as a three-volume story. In Volume II, the characters will find themselves on the battlefield at Raszyn. According to the author’s outline, they will save Prince Józef Poniatowski’s life by eliminating Austrian marksmen lying in wait for him.
Volume III will take the characters toward Moscow, across the Berezina, through the capitulation of the Modlin Fortress, and finally into exile near Paris.
Against the backdrop of major historical events, Dreszler follows her fictional characters — above all Anna and Wiktor — through love, successes, and failures. The author also introduces elements of folk belief, including a fertility ritual on the Narew involving Empress Josephine and the mysterious whispers of old Walentowa.
A Literary Trail Through the Region
Barbara Dreszler hopes the saga will also encourage readers to discover the places where the story unfolds. She sees the novel as an opportunity to promote literary tourism, with readers visiting the Modlin Fortress, Brody, Zakroczym, and Góra on the Narew by following in the footsteps of the characters.
The strong connection between the story and real places in the Nowy Dwór region is one of the most distinctly local aspects of Dreszler’s debut. Regional history is not merely a backdrop but an important part of the entire story.
Readers will be able to meet the author on September 26, 2026, during the Jarmark Nowodworski fair. Barbara Dreszler is inviting visitors to her booth and author meeting, where local residents will have an opportunity to learn more about a novel that takes its readers back to the era of Napoleon, Josephine, and the beginnings of the Modlin Fortress.
