W rozmowie z „The Times” niemiecki kardynał Gerhard Müller, były prefekt Kongregacji Nauki Wiary, wyraził poważne zaniepokojenie przyszłością Kościoła katolickiego. Ostrzegł, że wybór nieortodoksyjnego papieża podczas najbliższego konklawe może doprowadzić do schizmy i głębokiego rozłamu wewnątrz Kościoła. Purpurat wyraził obawę, że nowy papież mógłby próbować zyskać poklask mediów i świeckiego świata, co jego zdaniem jest sprzeczne z misją Kościoła. Podkreślił także, że przyszły Biskup Rzymu powinien być w stanie zjednoczyć Kościół w objawionej prawdzie, a nie kontynuować politykę medialnej popularności.
Kard. Müller, sam zaliczany do grona najbardziej wiernych Tradycji kardynałów, odniósł się również do pontyfikatu papieża Franciszka, zmarłego w 2023 roku. Choć nazwał go „dobrym człowiekiem”, nie krył różnic poglądów, szczególnie w kwestii udzielania błogosławieństw parom jednopłciowym oraz decyzji dotyczących Komunii świętej dla rozwodników. Wskazał także na inne kontrowersyjne działania zmarłego papieża, takie jak skupienie na imigracji czy zmianach klimatycznych.
W rozmowie z brytyjskim dziennikiem niemiecki kardynał powiedział: – Żaden katolik nie jest zobowiązany do przestrzegania błędnej doktryny. Katolicyzm nie polega na ślepym posłuszeństwie papieżowi bez poszanowania świętych pism, tradycji i doktryny Kościoła.
Hierarcha podkreślił również swój obowiązek moralny: – Muszę promować moją wizję doktrynalnego katolicyzmu; jestem to winien mojemu sumieniu. Jego wypowiedzi uznawane są za próbę kształtowania opinii przed kolejnym konklawe, którego wynik może zaważyć na przyszłości Kościoła na dekady.

The Church at a crossroads: Cardinal Müller warns against a heretical pope
Cardinal Gerhard Müller stated that the Church risks schism and division if an “orthodox” pope is not elected during the conclave. He added that the election of a heretical pope would be “a disaster.”
The former Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Gerhard Müller, said he is not a supporter of using terms such as “liberal” or “conservative” when speaking of papal candidates. According to him, the current divisions within the Catholic Church are deeper and more complex. The prelate is himself regarded as one of the cardinals faithful to Tradition. “The Times” considers him – alongside Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke from the USA – one of the most “conservative thinkers” in the Church.
In one of his statements, the German prelate said that the new pope to be elected at the upcoming conclave “must be orthodox – neither liberal nor conservative.” He said, “It is not about choosing between conservatives and liberals, but between orthodoxy and heresy.” – I pray that the Holy Spirit enlightens the cardinals, because a heretical pope who changes his mind daily depending on what the media says would be a disaster – he said.
Cardinal Müller also stated that the next pope should not “seek applause from the secular world, which sees the Church as a humanitarian organization dealing with social work.”
The prelate described the late Pope Francis as “a good man,” though he disagreed with him on many issues. Cardinal Gerhard Müller listed differences between himself and Francis, beginning with the late pope’s 2023 decision to allow blessings of same-sex unions. Pope Francis said at the time, “We cannot be judges who only reject, repel, exclude,” but the move caused widespread controversy, with bishops in Africa and Asia refusing to allow such blessings in their countries.
The list of Cardinal Müller’s “charges” against Francis’s papacy also includes the late pope’s focus on migrants and the natural environment – reports “The Times.”
The former head of the Doctrine Office noted that “Pope Francis was well perceived by the media, and there is a risk that [the cardinals] will consider continuing what Francis developed during his pontificate.”
However, the prelate emphasized that the cardinals “have a duty to choose a man who will be able to unite the Church in revealed truth.” – I hope the cardinals are not so influenced by what they read in newspaper headlines – he added.
Asked whether he would promote his vision of doctrinal Catholicism before the conclave, the German cardinal replied: – I must do it; I owe it to my conscience.
The alternative, he warned, is a Church at risk of division if an “orthodox” pope is not elected.
No Catholic is bound to follow erroneous doctrine – he said. – Catholicism is not about blind obedience to the pope without respect for the Holy Scriptures, tradition, and Church doctrine – the prelate emphasized.
It is worth noting that in 2017, Cardinal Gerhard Müller lost his position as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. “The Catholic Herald” notes this happened after he criticized Pope Francis’s decision to allow Holy Communion to divorced Catholics in new non-sacramental unions.
