A button from Okunin tells the story of an empire
A small military button discovered in the fields of Okunin has become another testimony to the military history of the Modlin Fortress region. The find was presented by the SHB Triglav group, which conducts historical and search-related research.
According to the information released, the discovered object is a button from the 2nd Sapper Battalion of the Imperial Russian Army, manufactured according to an 1829 pattern. On its front side are crossed axes — the symbol of sapper units — along with the number “2.”
The discovery is connected with the presence of Russian engineering troops, which for decades participated in the construction and maintenance of the Modlin Fortress fortifications and nearby defensive structures.
Researchers pointed out the interesting state of preservation of the artifact. The original loop used to sew the button onto a uniform had broken off, but the former owner manually created two small holes that allowed the object to continue being used.
This small detail is said to reflect the everyday practicality of soldiers and the fact that damaged equipment was repaired and reused rather than discarded.
The artifact was discovered during legal searches for hidden or lost movable monuments, including archaeological artifacts, conducted under authorization from the Mazovian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments.
As members of SHB Triglav emphasize, every such object remains not only an interesting military artifact, but also an important source of knowledge about the history of Modlin Fortress and the troops once stationed in the region.
