Gietrzwałd on the grand chessboard. Free screening of Grzegorz Braun’s film in Łomianki
The Culture Center in Łomianki invites you to a free screening of the film „Gietrzwałd 1877. War of the Worlds” directed by Grzegorz Braun. The screening will take place on September 18, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the ICDS performance hall. Free admission after registration through the online form.
The documentary „Gietrzwałd 1877. War of the Worlds” transports viewers to a key moment in European history, combining religious themes with the geopolitical game of superpowers. „These are the only apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Polish lands whose authenticity has been canonically confirmed,” remind the organizers.
The director asks provocative questions: what connects the apparitions in a Warmian village with the great game of superpowers at the end of the 19th century? Could a world war have broken out in 1877? And why does the historical context remain relevant today?
The film shows how Poland found itself in the „eye of the cyclone” – a place particularly exposed to the effects of superpower rivalry. Braun points to analogies with the current geopolitical situation, particularly the conflict in Ukraine.
The production was made on a grand scale – the crew filmed in Guatemala, Turkey, Bulgaria and Russia. The film features respected researchers and historians from various countries, although – as the director notes – Polish historiography almost completely overlooks the year 1877.
